What is Discover Deal, how do we make money, and how honest are our reviews? We’ve been asked these questions a lot and there's never been a simple answer. We have been thinking about how to answer these questions, so we thought we would answer our FAQs.
From the start had two goals in mind, to promote local things with integrity and get to know the town more. We’ve always tried to get the word out about everything fun and interesting in this town. Everything you’ve ever seen from us is posted because we think everyone should know about it.
We have so much fun blogging and it’s led us to some amazing people and experiences. When we started we were excited to see what we’d discover and that remains true almost two years on! We hope to continue for some time.
It can come from anywhere and be about anything. We have people get in touch via our email asking us to write a blog post. But most of the time we’ll see something that sparks our interest and that’s how a blog is started. As long as we can figure a way to write about it and make an interesting piece, that’s usually all it takes. Sometimes if something’s not right for the blog it can make a good post for our social media instead.
If you have a business in Deal and are making something great, give us an email and we’ll do our best to check it out and get it on here. It can be anything from something from a cool side project you're starting up to your new winter menu.
We want our reviews to be trustworthy so we try to be as transparent as possible. We haven't taken the most traditional route to blogging as the Discover Deal isn’t focused on making us money. Nobody has ever paid us to promote them through Discover Deal, nor have we included any adverts. We did consider this at one point but we feel it detracts from the honesty of the blog, and our recommendations. Our content is honest and ad-free, that’s the way we’d like to keep it.
We do get given things for free, like admission to an event or meals to review. But like any good bloggers, we make sure we’re only promoting things we like and that everything we say is honest and from the heart. We think that’s what people like about us and if we lose sight of that, we lose what’s great about Discover Deal. Plus there’s never a shortage of great food and events in the town, it’s getting into all of them that’s the hard part!
The simple answer is, it’s not our job- it's a side project. We spend most of our time these days working as freelancers in design and marketing. We do work for local Deal businesses, you might have seen our work in the new Hut 55 and Pomegranate. This is under the guise of our new business Surething Studio, which we try and keep relatively separate from Discover Deal. We’ve just launched our new website, where you can find out more about us and what we do.
As we’ve become busier in our freelance work, Discover Deal takes up less of our time. We recently went from posting a blog every week to once every two weeks. This just gives us more time per post and keeps things to a standard we are happy with.
This year we designed a set of four Deal themed Christmas Cards. Starting with a few initial sketches in the summer, we put in a lot of time trying to get colours right and making sure the images in them were recognisable as Deal landmarks. When something we’ve made gets a good reaction from you it’s all the more rewarding. We do this out of our own money, we have to make big print runs to keep the cost down and with four designs this can really rack up. Last year we were ecstatic that we sold out of 2 full reprints of our cards, so this year we went even more crazy and made four!
We have recently introduced a tip jar to the home page of the website. You can make a donation of your choice to us and it would go towards making more things, blogging equipment and growing our business. We receive all the money you donate and the system is completely secure.
If you like what we do, or if you read the blog each week it’s a way for you to show your support. We’d really appreciate the gesture and it would go a long way while we are still finding our feet as a small business. Any purchase of our Christmas cards is also a great way to support us and wholeheartedly appreciated. Alternatively, you can support us for free by spreading the word about our blog and what we do.
Thank you to everyone who reads the blog or likes our posts on social media. The support we’ve had as exceeded any expectations we’ve ever had. We couldn't do it without you!
